Y2K fashion – the early 2000s style – is back among the Gen Z. Low rise, oversize cargo pants, micro tops, extra-long sleeves, neon colors, cut-out dresses, tye-dye fabrics, platform soles, animal patterns, faux fur, mesh and maxi logos. These are the protagonists of the latest fashion return.

The birth of Y2K aesthetics

Y2K fashion was born in the early years of the new millennium, among teens who considered themselves survivors. At the end of the nineties the urban myth of the millennium bag had spread. A glitch that would have crushed all systems in a kind of technological apocalypse. There was a kernel of truth in it. Software’s then stored data with only values between 00 and 99, therefore, with the year 2000 there could of been a problem. However, the issue was solved in time and there were no major problems.

The positive beginning of the new millennium was greeted with a daring and bold style. Y2K fashion celebrated the advent of technology. A future seen as bright and full of possibilities. New sustainable fabrics were discovered, vintage was a must and low-cost flights shortened distances. Globetrotter looks spread, contaminated with ethnical influences. And urban K-pop style came from the East.

Identikit of Y2K fashion

Y2K fashion is a mix-and-match of heterogeneous and colorful trends. A spirit that animated the popular brands at the time, which are now having a comeback. Monella Vagabonda, with its iconic frog, announces on social media: “We had just a little break from slaying”. ANGELDEVIL brings wings back on jeans with its Resurrection collection. Art and mythology are its inspirations, themes experiencing a revival.

Even Fiorucci’s little angels are flying again. Today the Italian brand has a new identity reinventing the past. Casual looks that combine ethereal and bon ton vibes with a provocative style.

Y2K fashion also bursts a super girly aesthetic. Don’t Call Me Jennyfer and Kappa unveil a collection exclusively for women. Puma launched a footwear Teveris NITRO line in collaboration with the girl-band; IVE. Pink is in the spotlight in the joint capsule collection by Heaven by Marc Jacobs and Blumarine.

So, Millennials pass the baton to Gen Z.
