Today we are still going to talk about the TV series Euphoria. Yes, I am obsessed, I know. Today we are going to talk about Kat Hernandez, played by Barbie Ferreira.
At the beginning of the TV series, the girl is bullied for her curvy appearance and for her inexperience with boys but during the episodes she turns into a super confident man-eater. It is admirable how Ket manages to transform his insecurity into determination, but the path is not that simple…
Let’s see one of the clue scenes. Kat is in the middle of a mental breakdown because of her apparently perfect relationship. It’s right in this moment that she realises that she’s not in love with her boyfriend because she can’t love herself.
The scene is significant and above all realistic, everyone of us has definitely felt like Kat at least once in life. The desperate teen ager is overwhelmed by her thoughts that suddenly materialise in her bedroom, she is surrounded by beautiful influencers with a statutory body that remind her of the slogans that they daily publish on their ig stories: “Love yourself! Break the schemes of patriarchy! Think positive! Be yourself!”
“But that’s what I’m trying to tell you, I hate myself!”
This is a delicate issue. How hard is it to accept ourself in a society that imposes body types impossible to achieve? When Instagram filters make us forget about our real appearance? When everyone competes with everyone showing who has the best life on social media? When are we subjected to daily comparisons with others life and appearance?
The answer is simple, actually, much easier said than done: “There’s nothing more powerful than a (fat) girl who doesn’t give a f**k.” This is what Rue tells us, a character in the series but also the narrator. The solution is do not care! Just live your life and mind your own business. And I couldn’t agree more!
