The stooping trend reached Milan thanks to an Instagram account posting pictures of vintage furniture abandoned in the streets. It’s called Stooping Milano and helps used furniture and design objects finding a new home. Founded by two students of Milan’s Politecnico, this IG account has become a sustainable furniture platform. The pictures portray objects people places outside their homes for the local waste disposal company (AMSA) to collect. Thanks to these posts, they often get picked up before AMSA by people who like them. A circularity that’s good for the environment and can help people in need.
Stooping in English literally means to bend down and pick up something from the ground. In New York, though, this verb became synonym with taking home furniture and design objects abandoned in the streets. Often, they’re still in good conditions, maybe out of stock and sometimes even valuable. And when they do have some defects, it’s possible to renovate them or change their look with some simple DIY.
Sara and Giulia decided to import the stooping trend from the US because they’re passionate about vintage. But also to help non-resident students like them. In a city like Milan, where the cost of living and real estate keeps rising, it may be difficult to furnish and decorate you home. Especially for young people, students and precarious workers, who live in rental flats or rooms. Stopping enables them to be creative, save money and is also good for our planet.
