The world, with its myriad facets, can seem even more magnetic when viewed from an unusual perspective: from above. Costas Spathis, an architect turned photographer, has uniquely captured this magic.

Born in Trikala, Greece, Spathis has become renowned for his aerial photographs that carry a geometric and minimal touch. They’re images so pristine, so sharply geometrically balanced, they seem almost digitally crafted rather than snapped.

While urban landscapes have always held allure for Spathis, it’s the sea, with its untamed majesty, that profoundly captures his gaze. The people, the colors of swimsuits, the life rings, create a visual contrast that pops against the blue and deep green of the sea.

Recently, Spathis turned his focus to Naples, capturing the city in all its vibrant beauty. From Piazza Matteotti to the unmistakable Post Office building, from railway stations to the Spanish Quarters, Spathis has seized the city’s essence. He described Naples as a city that “catapulted him back in time,” with its ancient alleyways and historic homes.

And just when you think you’ve seen it all, along comes the Aerial Photography Awards 2020, where photographers from around the world showcase their bird’s-eye views. Spathis, not only showcased his works but also sat on the jury panel.

Costas Spathis is not just a photographer but a storyteller. Each of his shots invites us to see the world from a different perspective, reminding us that beauty lies in the details, the contrasts, and the hidden geometries of our world. And, thanks to him, we get to admire them from above.
