Here is the new di trend from Tik Tok, this time a bit sad but portraying the reality of our surroundings. Everything comes into being from tik toker Claire Wenrick, a social media coach.
The girl posts a video where she is getting ready to go out and shows her outfit, she is wearing a blue see-through tank top and a camouflage skirt but she does not feel safe walking the streets alone in what she has chosen to wear. That’s where her oversized T-shirt, named as a “subway shirt,” steps in. In the video description, the creator writes, “stay safe ladiesssss.”
The subway shirt is an over shirt or dress worn as protection to avoid cat calling, unwanted stares or even assault. The problem affects not only New York City but unfortunately the whole world. How many times have you found yourself wearing a certain outfit but not feeling comfortable because you were aware that you might attract unwanted stares or comments?
The hashtag #subwayshirt immediately went viral, reaching 5 million views along with #subwayshirtnyc with 2 billion. In fact, the videos did not end there. We have others, titled, “The outfit VS The outfit I wear o the tub so I don’t get harassed and stared at by the creeps” (@itssophiemilner) or even “Ladies now that it’s hot out, don’t forget to bring your subway/commute overshirt! Stay Hot, Stay Sexy, Stay safe from creeps!” (@hanselkai)
From these headlines, girls talk about it like it’s a habit, a very bad habit. Not feeling free to be able to wear what you want should not be the order of the day, unfortunately, however, we feel forced to do so too often. All of this reminds us of how much our lives are subjugated by a society ready to point the finger at us and not at those who attack. Let us remember that the real problem is not what we wear or don’t wear but it is the aggressors!
