We can breathe a sigh of relief… Friday the 17th has passed. Many people don’t believe in superstition, although you never know… Bad luck is always around the corner. Best to take a red horn with you, just in case. Opening an umbrella in the house, breaking a mirror, seeing a black cat, going under a ladder, spilling salt on the table. Who hasn’t thought “bummer!” when any of these things happen?
But what’s wrong with Friday the 17th? It is considered the day of bad luck because the number 17 corresponds to misfortune in the Neapolitan smorfia and Good Friday is the day of Jesus’ death. It is said that the mixing of these two elements does not bring anything good. In fact, hostility toward the number 17 goes back as far as ancient Rome the anagram of the Roman number XVII (which corresponds to 17) is VIXI which means “vissi” (I lived) a blatant reference to death. Not surprisingly, it’s also the word often found engraved on graves.
