From ribbons and lace to furs and oversized earrings, from bow-shaped hair clips to the most flashy jewelry, from ballet flats to high sandals, or rather, extremely high ones. In other words, from the Coquette core, a hyper-feminine aesthetic that we are now familiar with, to the Mob Wife style, literally “wife of the mobster.” A transition that knows no mediations, a sudden shift from one style to its antithesis. This is what is happening in the world of fashion, where trends follow one another at a speed that transcends seasons and hinders any prediction. The protagonist is the aforementioned bold trend, a way of dressing inspired by the female characters in gangster-themed films and television series, such as Adriana La Cerva from The Sopranos, Elvira Hancock from Scarface, or Ginger McKenna from Casino.

As with all other trends, this one also originates from social media, and it seems that the pioneer is an Italian-American influencer, Sarah Arcuri, known by the pseudonym @TheSweetPaisana. But there are hundreds of videos on Instagram and TikTok where numerous followers of the trend explain how to dress like the wife of the boss. Maxi furs, heavy gold necklaces, towering shoes, accessories covered in animal prints, extremely short dresses, denim miniskirts, and leather pants are needed. And, of course, large sunglasses should never be missing.

It didn’t take long before the aesthetic gained favor among the most followed celebrities by the Gen Z, such as Hailey Bieber, Kendall Jenner, and Emily Ratajkowski. The same ones who until a few weeks ago left their homes alternating between strict outfits, in solid colors and logo-free, with total looks in pastel pink. In conclusion, one has to wonder whether quiet luxury and coquette core will be able to coexist with an aesthetic that has nothing “quiet” and “coquettish” about it.
