December 1st is here, and this means only one thing: it’s Christmas time! We are already starting to feel the Christmas atmosphere; presents, trees, coloured lights, gnomes, nativity scenes, snow (fake or not, it doesn’t really matter) and of course, food and sweets. The king of Christmas sweets is, without a doubt, panettone.
According to the legend, the famous sweet was born in our very own Milan at the end of the 15th century. It is said that on Christmas Eve, the cook of the Sforza family burned the dessert of the banquet. Leaving the family without dessert was not an alternative… At that point, Toni, the dishwasher, offered his loaf of yeast, which he worked with flour, eggs, sugar, raisins and candied fruit, obtaining a leavened and soft dough. The Sforza family fell madly in love with the cake, which they decided to call “Pan de Toni” in honour of its creator.
But where can we find the best panettone? The most sought-after venues are definitely: Marchesi 1824, Pasticceria Cucchi, Pasticceria Sant’Ambroues, Iginio Massari, Ernst Knam.
