Is the American Dream still alive?

What’s going on in the USA? There’s a bit of hustle and bustle. To figure out what’s going on we need to take a few steps back. In 1973, Roe v Wade’s ruling was passed in which the right to abortion was recognised even in the absence of a woman’s or fetus’ health problems. In this way, abortion becomes a constitutionally guaranteed right. A great step forward!

Well. Let’s go back to today, a few days ago the Supreme Court decided to delete this right with the result that every single state can apply its own law on this matter. Some studies predict that at least 26 states will be against abortion. A big step back…!

Years and years of battles, demonstrations and protests for our rights tossed in the wind, cancelled. Even today, in 2022, women choices depend on other people (Attention! Both men and women, unfortunately…) Even today women don’t have the opportunity to choose what to do with their own body. It should be “my body, my choice” right?

What if she was raped? If she had any complications? If she didn’t have financial stability to raise a child? What if she just doesn’t feel ready? What if she has other priorities?

“As a girl, I just hope that one day I have as many rights as a gun.” This is just one of the many phrases that appear on banners and that really should make us think.

All over again. Demonstrations, tear gas, protests, billboards and banners. After 50 years, we have to fight again for a right that was took away from us.

Now what will happen? Exactly what happened a few days ago in Malta (the only European Union country where abortion is forbidden in any case) to the tourist Andrea Prudente. The pregnant woman had a haemorrhage and was stuck in a hospital for a week in danger of death. Despite this, the fetus heartbeat was still present so no one could intervene. Andrea had to move urgently in Spain in order to terminate the pregnancy.

Is still the American dream alive…?
