17th May. International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. On May 17th in 1990, homosexuality was removed from the list of mental illnesses. That’s why this date was chosen. In 2007, the European Union established this day to fight discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Unfortunately, here in Italy, we are still far from the day when everyone can express their personality and their love in a serene and peaceful way. Many still ask themselves the reason of the existence of this day. Why? Just turn on the TV and watch the news or go to the news section on our mobile phone. That’s the reason.

We all know how sensitive this subject is and unfortunately is little understood by many people, too many people. However, It’s important to teach, especially children and teen agers, to sensitise this topic. That is why the Minister of Education has established this circular.

“Teachers and schools of all levels, within their teaching and organisational autonomy, are invited to create opportunities with their students to deepen their knowledge on issues related to discrimination, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms”

It could look like a step forward and instead this circular has been defined “disconcerting” by some politicians, and probably by many other people. What is disconcerting about educating children and guys to have respect for everyone?

I’ll tell you what’s really disconcerting. May 20th, three days after the International Day against Homophobia. I open the news section on my phone and this is what I read. “Brutal attack in Cosentino, 16 year old beaten because gay”. The boy was violently beaten by his uncle and three other men: 4 broken ribs, deviated nasal septum and various injuries.

So, are we still wondering why this day exists?
