Not sure what to watch at the movies? Coming out soon is ‘The Little Mermaid,’ the 1989 Disney classic we all know. The film is scheduled to be released on May 24th, 2023!
Who hasn’t loved the Little Mermaid Ariel? Iconic character, the beautiful fair-skinned maiden with Caucasian features and red hair. The actress chosen to play the protagonist is named Halle Lynn Bailey and is a 22-year-old African American girl, actress and also singer, part of a musical duo called Chloe x Halle.
As the news spread, the public split into two factions: many criticised the character for not being ‘true to the original,’ also adding that “Political correctness is annoying.” Others, however, appreciated the different choice and showed support and solidarity in seeing characters of different ethnicities in a world as big as Disney’s.
Yes, it is true. In our minds we didn’t picture it that way because our memory is different. Probably no one expected to see this little mermaid but now we’re in 2023, we’re not in 1989 anymore, guys! We need to include, not exclude!
