It’s true, sometimes they’re annoying, but labels are really important. It is fundamental reading them to know which materials a product is made and its instructions care. Although, let’s face it, most of us can’t wait to cut them off…

And if there were no labels? What would be the alternative?

One solution would be to print the label inside the garment, although for many it might be not very nice, aesthetically speaking.

In the last period, the American Apparel & Footwear Association has proposed to eliminate labels to replace them with digital IDs and QR codes, less annoying and obviously more sustainable. Nowadays, the have QR code for everything (for the menu at the restaurant, among the streets, on TV, for events…) why not also use it as a sustainable fashion initiative?

Unlocking the phone, opening the camera and scanning the code has become a natural and everyday gesture. Gen Z and Millennial approved! Boomers are still learning…

This QR Code could be a real sustainable breakthrough, especially for the transaprency issue, it would allow anyone to have any information about a garment, starting from the materials used, suppliers, how to care/wash/dry the product and so on… Just by opening the camera of your smartphone,

Many brands have already started to use QR codes for other purposes. For example, Diesel has printed them on its labels to ensure the customer that the product is original, thus protecting themselves from counterfeiting. L’Oréal decided to place them in taxis, thus catching the attention of people blocked in traffic. Again, Victoria’s Secret used the famous codes on various advertising boards to launch the “Sexier than skin” campaign.

What do you think? Will it ever be possible to delete all labels?
