Digital Twins. It sounds like the title of a science fiction film, but it’s not! Instead, it’s one of the latest tech-innovations in the fashion world, already adopted by Max Mara, Diesel and Bally.
A digital twin is the virtual representation of a physical entity, living or non-living, of a person or even of a complex system. This is the scientific definition that I found on a website… Let’s try to explain it in a simpler way. I would define it a bit like a clone of an object, person or place.
And the first thought is, “Okay, so? What are we gonna do about them?”
Digital twins can help fashion be more sustainable and avoid large amounts of waste. For example, think about the creation process of a dress. Before achieving the final product, many prototypes are created, in different colours, sizes and materials. But what about all the wrong prototypes? Yes, they are discarded and thrown away!
Using this new technology all you need is a computer that simulates all the different prototypes without the need to actually produce them. After having decided the final result, just that one will be reproduced.
The interesting note is that this practice would avoid both waste during production, as we have just seen, and also waste during the purchase phase.
In fact, it is possible to create a virtual twin of ourselves, creating an avatar with our own physical characteristics and let him/her try on the garments we would like to buy. We Wear is the app that uses digital twins to have a 360 º view of the fit. Queues at the dressing rooms will only be a distant memory!
Moreover, Metro UK confirms that, thanks to the use of digital twins, the return of a garment is reduced to 70%.
How many times have you bought a dress or a pair of shoes that you thought you liked and instead when it comes the fit is wrong or they do not fit as you had imagined? Too many times!
Incredible how technology is making progresses in these years!
