After the tragic death of Virgil Abloh on November 28th of 2021, now it’s time to figure out who will take over Off-White. It is always difficult to choose who will take the place of the creator of a brand when he (or she) disappears suddenly… but unfortunately it’s an inevitable choice.
A few days ago it was announced the successor, Ibrahim Kamara, named as the brand’s new art and image director. Let’s see his story!
Ibrahim was born in Sierra Leone in 1990, he grew up in Gambia and at the age of 11 he moved to London. His parents wanted him to become a doctor so, influenced by their choice and afraid to disappoint them, he began his scholastic career in the scientific field, even if aware that this was not his path. When it comes time to choose the university, he faces his parents and quit the medical career.
In 2013 he took courage and began studying at the prestigious Central Saint Martins. At the graduation project he presents his work, “2026”, in which he imagines how fashion would have been for a black man in the next 10 years. Among the looks illustrated in the project, we have shirts worn as skirts, white gloves combined with low jeans and even a wedding dress. Yes, Ibrahim predicted that the division between man and woman would gradually disappear.
After his school career, he joined ID magazine where he was promoted to Senior Fashion Editor, then moved to Dazed magazine as editor-in-chief. Finally, here he is, 32 years old and director of a brand, not just any brand, but Off-White.
Ibrahim and Virgil knew each other very well. Their friendship was born on Instagram, among their DMs, then evolved over the past three years, sharing experiences and values.
“Virgil will forever be with us. With me. He changed the world and left an indelible mark on anyone who encountered him and beyond. Generous with his time, mind and creativity – he saw everyone and created with all humans in mind. I am honoured to further link my ties to Off-White as their Art & Image Director and be a part of the team that will tell the rest of the story Virgil started writing for us all” ha dichiarato Ibrahim sul suo instagram.
