Burnout is real problem in modern society. The solution may be called Niksen, a Dutch word that has recently gone viral in the Netherlands. Literally it means “to do nothing”. Latins already divided life into otium (idleness) and negotium (industriousness), considering them both useful and necessary. Still, the modern culture of productivity at all costs has demonised idleness. Today we perceive inactivity as a waste of time. We have to always do something, to produce, to make money, to train, t sweat… But, while it’s true that “no pain no gain”, it’s also true that neglecting rest can lead to burnout.

Practicing Niksen means to allow yourself to relax, to let your mind wander and take time for yourself. It doesn’t necessarily consist in staying in bed (which is also ok). It can also consist in doing unpretentious activities for the sheer pleasure of doing them. For example, walking for the sake of being in nature instead of making 10000 steps. Eating to enjoy your favorite food instead of sticking to a diet. Taking a swim because you enjoy it instead of burning a particular amount of calories.

This approach to time is good for both physical and mental health. It helps to relieve stress and recharge your energy. It fosters imagination and creativity. It helps to find inner peace and self-love. All things that, besides doing you good, will also make you more productive and efficient at work or in other more demanding activities. Idleness, if properly measured and enjoyed fully and without guilt, doesn’t interfere with productivity. It boosts it. And it’s a source of well-being.
