Deepfake and deepnude are two words that’s going to become all the more viral. Deepfake refers to fake images created with artificial intelligence. Deepnude indicates the same thing, but with nude pictures. Indeed, there are programs capable of removing people’s clothes, generating fake naked photos. A growing phenomenon among teens, often related to bullying or revenge porn. The victims are mostly women.

According to a study by Home Security Heroes, between 2002 and 2023 the number of deepfake images increased by 464%. A few days ago Italian singer Rose Villain reported being a victim of deepfake after some photos showing her naked went viral. Numerous reports of deepnude arrive also from schools. One year ago, two students of a middle school in the province of Rome had been accused of creating and posting fake naked pictures of their classmates. The same thing happened to a teacher in an institute in Latina, whose hard photos ended up on a porn site. All the victims were women.

Victims of deepfake and deepnude should immediately turn to the police. The authors of the fake images could be denounced and investigated for defamation, harassment and persecutory acts. If they blackmail their victims – as it often happens – not to spread the images, they could also face an extortion charge. If the victims are minors, the authorities could also charge them for detention and dissemination of child pornography material. The penalty can be up to two years imprisonment.
