Taking care of yourself doesn’t mean just to eat healthy, exercise, have a beauty routine and sleep eight hours per night. It also means to take care of your mental health. And social media has a huge impact on it. That’s why experts started talking about social self-care.

Nowadays, most of us have several social accounts and scrolling has become an innate gesture. But every time we dive into virtual reality, we immerse ourselves into other people’s life. So, we start unconsciously comparing ourselves with others. Our appearance, our lifestyle, our career, our love life. And usually others seem better than us. Being perfect online is much easier than in real life. Here, it’s impossible. Human beings are imperfect by nature.

So, how do you take care of yourself in the age of social media? Here are some behaviours that psychologists suggest to include in your social self-care routine:

• Cultivate your passions and be creative: doing something just for pleasure, with no expectation in terms of approval or money, improves self-esteem and helps relaxing and avoiding negative thoughts.
• Focus on your goals: focusing on yourself and your life path will help you stop comparing yourself to others.
• Nurture your relationships: having authentic relationships with people in real life instead of social networks will make you feel loved and valuable.
• Disconnect and take time for yourself: being alone with yourself away from screens helps you to better know and love yourself.
