At the Grammy Awards 2024 women (some queers) stood out. And not only for their outfits, but also for the number of awards received.
Taylor Swift won for the fourth time the award for best album, setting an all-female record. She’s the first to win this title four times. Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, and Frank Sinatra stopped at three.
Celine Dion scored a different and even more important victory. In 2022 she was diagnosed with cancer, but at the Grammys she returned on stage for the first time. Resilience is female.
Miley Cirus received two awards: best recording of the year for Flowers and best pop solo performance. The singer is openly bisexual and isn’t the only queer artist that stood out during the Awards. Like her, Billie Eilish, Brandi Carlile, Brandy Clark, and the Boygenies. All women who use their music to fight for civil rights, including those of LGBTQ+.
Solidarity has also scored a victory at the Grammy Awards 2024. Female solidarity, or sisterhood, as you prefer. The competing artists have proven to prefer friendship to rivalry. Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey, for example, have been inseparable throughout the evening.
At the Grammy Awards 2024 one of the women involved in Barbie was also awarded. Something that won’t happen at the Oscars, since the only nominee is Ryan Gosling. What Was I Made For?, one of the songs from the film, was appointed best song of the year. Billie Eilish, who recently came out, received the award. In her speech she thanked Greta Gerwig for making “the best film of the year”. Any reference to the Academy is purely (not) random.
